Charter information for Malta and it’s surrounding locations.

Malta –

With it’s strategic location in the centre of the Med, Malta has a long history with seafarers throughout the ages. Fast forward to modern times where yachting has become a much sought after pleasure and Malta is still being courted by yachts from all over the world. With one of the worlds most majestical natural harbours spanning both sides of the bastions of the capital city, Valletta, Malta caters for everyone’s taste. From the historical cities to the crystal clear waters that surround the island, cruising around our shores is definitely something not to be missed.

With its many indents, Malta is littered with different bays and coves offering many a beautiful anchorage spot. Below are a recommended few.

Malta- Mellieha, Paradise bay, Ghajn Tuffieha, Golden bay

Comino – Crystal bay, Blue lagoon, San Niklaw

Gozo- Mgarr ix-Xini, xlendi, Dwejra and neighbouring azure window

Should you wish to travel further offshore, Sicily is just 50Nm north of Malta. Several harbours are located around the island with a modern marina opening recently Marina di Ragusa which is only 53 Nm from Malta.

Sicily –

One of the most popular locations on the SE of Sicily is the old harbour of Siracusa. With a large basin this harbour caters for types of vessels. The old part of town has the most to offer with some of the best seafood restaurants you may come across. The market is definitely something not to miss with fresh local produce on display.

Further north past Catania you will find the two harbours Riposto and Giardini Naxos which lie just beneath the Volcano “mother Etna”. Riposto is provides better amenities and a safer location to berth but during fair weather anchoring in the bay of Giardidni naxos is recommended. Visitors must head up the mountain to the town of Taormina. The town, overlooking the sea, is full of small narrow streets and shops whilst also providing you with one of the best views in Sicily.

Pass through the straights of Messina which separates Sicily and Italy by about 2Nm. A natural whirlpool in the Northern portion of the strait has been linked to the Greek legend of Scylla and Charybdis.

The Aeolian Islands –

A group of eight islands just north of Sicily, they consist of Lipari, the largest island, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea further west the island of Ustica. Each island has its own different character and there are many different beautiful bays to drop anchor. A night cruise around Stromboli is recommended if the weather is calm as it provides a true spectacle as it lights up the night being an active volcano.
